“When you realize that you want to spend
the rest of your life with somebody,
you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible”
(When Harry Met Sally)
How long do you want your engagement to be? I know couples who got married 3 months after they announced their engagement, and I know couples who leisurely planned their wedding for 3 years… We did it in 6 months.
Our advice: try to do it in less than a year. Wedding planning is stressful, and no matter how much time you give yourself, you’ll run up against that 4-month invisible wall, beyond which, panic reigns supreme.
Also, with less time, you will become more efficient. You zero in on the most important things, and don’t spend money on extras. You narrow down your choices and stick with them. Once you pay your deposits, you will have no time for second-guessing your choices.
Time of the Year
Would you like a spring, summer, fall, or winter wedding? Summer (specifically, May to October) is the most popular wedding season. It is romantic and lively, warm and comfortable. Days are long. No severe weather to complicate flights or driving. School break facilitates travel.
But then, in the summer, your top choices of venues and vendors will book up quickly, and you may have to wait until next year’s season or settle for the second best. Venues and vendors charge top dollar in the summer. Formalwear does not go well with a heat wave. You have to weigh the pros and cons of the different seasons.
Day of the Week
Saturdays are the most popular day of the week for weddings, with Fridays and Sundays a distant second. Saturdays are convenient for your guests. Most people have the whole day off, and don’t have to rush to work on Sunday morning. As such, it is easier for everyone to get into a relaxed and festive mood, stay out later, and have an extra drink to your happiness. If you have out-of-town guests who are not taking time off work, Saturday is almost non-negotiable, because they will need Friday and Sunday for travel.
Saturdays are not perfect, unfortunately. Especially in summer, your top choices of venues and vendors will book up quickly. Venues and vendors charge top dollar for a Saturday engagement.
A word of caution regarding long weekends. Long weekend wedding works best for a small wedding or a destination wedding, allowing you to spend more than one day with your guests. But most people like to keep long weekends open for other plans.
